The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, has terminated the PhD program of then assistant police commissioner Mohammad Mohsin Khan, who allegedly raped a 26-year-old IIT-K research student, an official said on Saturday.
The action of canceling the PhD of 2013 batch PPS officer Mohsin Khan has been taken after the recommendation of DGP Headquarters.
Mohsin Khan was doing PhD in Cyber Crime and Criminology from IIT-K.
IIT Kanpur director Manindra Agarwal said he has received a letter from the police department stating that the NOC issued to Khan for the PhD program has been cancelled.
“Immediately after receiving the letter, the institute also terminated the PhD program of the then ACP Kanpur Mohammad Mohsin Khan. Written communication regarding termination has been made,” Aggarwal told PTI.
The IIT-K student had filed an FIR against Khan on December 24 on charges of criminal intimidation and defaming her.
The IIT-Kanpur PhD student had said in her FIR that Khan threatened her with dire consequences and made objectionable posts with the intention of defaming her by making false allegations.
Assistant CP Abhishek Pandey said that the ACP and his lawyer allegedly made a tweet with an intention to defame him and shared objectionable posts on social media platforms.
After receiving threats from Khan, the student told police that she had confined herself to her hostel as she was scared of the consequences. She also told the police that Khan, pretending to be unmarried, befriended her and had relations with her. Pandey said he later pressured her for physical intimacy on the pretext of marriage.
She further told the police that whenever she raised the issue of marriage, Khan would harass her. Unable to bear the crisis, she approached the IIT-K administration, including the director and professors, who assured her of support.
Police said that based on their complaint, a five-member Special Investigation Team has been formed under the chairmanship of Additional DCP Archana Singh to investigate the case.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Ankita Sharma had earlier said, “The SIT has been directed to conduct a detailed investigation and ensure disposal of the case on the basis of facts and evidence.”
Meanwhile, the SIT has given 48 hours to Mohsin Khan to record his statement in the case, an official associated with the SIT said, requesting anonymity.
