“If you follow the law, the US provides an opportunity. But those who violate the law will face the results,” McLeod told PTI video on a question related to issues faced by Indian students in various American universities.

Indian students in the US are struggling with the growing threat of exile as the authorities have canceled the F -1 visa on several issues -which is from participation in Palestinian protests from minor legal violations.

During his weekly press briefing on Thursday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaywal said, “We know that many Indian students have received communication from the US government about their F -1 visa status, which is a student visa. We are looking at the matter. Our embassy and consulate, they are in touch with students.”

Jaiswal was answering a question on several Indian students receiving communication from American officials under the Trump administration on the possible dismissal of his visa.

While McLod did not mention specific cases, he emphasized that the rearing of American legal and visa requirements was necessary to avoid punishment.

McLod urged people living illegally in the US, including relatives of Indian families, voluntarily urged to return to their home countries.

“There is still an opportunity to return to your homeland,” he said, instructing them to use the CBP app to contact the Homeland Security Department or facilitate their departure.

The US official hoped that those who enter the country would voluntarily leave to avoid strict enforcement measures.

More than 3.3 lakh Indian students were enrolled in US higher education institutions in 2023-24 educational years, which increased by 23 percent from the previous year. This figure made India a country with most students in the US.

However, according to reports, the number of visas issued to Indian students fell 30 percent in February – the first month of the second Trump administration.

Talking about US vice -president JD Vance’s visit to India, the US official said he would meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi before his personal visit to Jaipur and Agra.

“They will discuss all the issues important for both countries,” McLeod said.

Asked about the exile of the Mumbai attack, Tahwur Hussain Rana was accused in India, said that the US had deported him to face justice under Indian law. “India and America will continue to cooperate with anti -terrorism measures.”
