Many colleges in India provide a launch pad to make those dreams come true. There are more than 50 top fashion design colleges in the country. These include 36 privately owned colleges and 15 public/government colleges. Some of these top fashion design colleges include NIFT, Whistling Woods International, Pearl Academy, etc. To secure admission after passing 12th, students have to qualify for entrance exams like NIFT Entrance Exam, Pearl Academy Entrance Exam. , etc.

National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT)
Widely regarded as the pinnacle of excellence in fashion design education, NIFT was established in 1986 by the Government of India under the Ministry of Textiles. For admission to NIFT’s graduate program in Design, candidates are required to qualify an entrance examination. With its industry-centric approach and comprehensive curriculum, NIFT offers a four-year curriculum that equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the field. Located in Hauz Khas, NIFT offers a range of UG, PG and Diploma programs in the field of Fashion Design. The institute offers courses that include BDS, BFTech (Bachelor of Fashion Technology), MDS and MFM (Master of Fashion Management). NIFT Delhi fees ranges from Rs 64,900 to Rs 12.34 lakh. National Institute of Fashion Technology has achieved top rank for fashion design by The Week 2023 and Business Today 2023.
Currently, it has 18 campuses spread across the country, including NIFT Mumbai, NIFT Chennai, NIFT Patna, NIFT Gandhinagar, NIFT Bengaluru, NIFT Hyderabad and NIFT Kolkata.
Pearl Academy
Next on the list is Pearl Academy. Located in Mumbai, it is a private institute that offers UG, PG and professional certificate programs in various disciplines. Candidates seeking admission in this college have to appear for the Pearl Academy Entrance Examination, followed by a personal interview and portfolio presentation conducted by the institute.
The courses offered in this college are BDS, MDS and certification which include Product Design, Fashion Styling and Image Design, Fashion Design, Fashion Specialization in Fashion Design, BDS in Fashion and Celebrity Make Up, Personal Styling and Image Consultancy and in Fashion MDS included. Designs for women’s wear, among others. Fees for B.Des courses range between Rs 22.16 lakh to Rs 29.94 lakh, while for certification courses it ranges between Rs 2.1 lakh to Rs 3.58 lakh, and for M.Des courses it is Rs 11.85 lakh.
Symbiosis Institute of Design (SID), Pune
Established in 2004, Symbiosis Institute of Design, Pune (SID Pune), is one of the premier design schools in India and is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). SID Pune conducts the admission process for undergraduate design programmes. Therefore, it is important to fill an application form along with fee payment and appear for the online entrance exam, i.e. Symbiosis Entrance Exam for Design (SEED) to enroll in the courses. After the SEED exam, students will have to go through the Portfolio Review and Personal Interaction (PRPI) round and personal interaction.
B.Des in Communication Design (Animation Film Design), B.Des in Fashion Design, B.Des in Communication Design and B.Des in Fashion Communication are some of the courses offered here. The total tuition fee of this institute is Rs 19 lakh.
Army Institute of Fashion and Design
Established by the Army Welfare Education Society in 2004, the Army Institute of Fashion and Design (AIFD) is located in Bangalore. The institute aims to provide professional and technical education to its students covering the areas of fashion design and apparel management. Presently, the institute offers two degrees at the undergraduate level, namely B Sc in Fashion and Apparel Design and B Sc in Interior Design and Decoration. Admission to the courses is based on the marks obtained in the Army Institute of Fashion and Design written entrance examination. The tuition fee of this institute is Rs 6 lakh.
Whistling Woods International
Finally, we have Whistling Woods International, founded in 2006 by Indian filmmaker Subhash Ghai. The institute offers a four-year course in BDS in Fashion Design for a total of Rs 20 lakh. To get admission in this institute, candidates who have passed 12th class or equivalent from any recognized board must qualify MECAT: Media and Entertainment Common Aptitude Test, CAT: Creative Aptitude Test, SOP: Statement of Purpose and PI: Personal Interview.
