Humans were not the only living organisms to react to the total solar eclipse observed in the United States, with some animals also displaying unusual behavior during the astronomical event on April 8. These animals include giraffes, gorillas, lions, macaws and flamingos.
Scientists and zookeepers at the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas observed unusual behavior of animals during the solar eclipse. According to a report published by CBS News, some animals displayed curiosity and alertness.
During the solar eclipse on Monday, as the sky began to darken, many animals headed towards their barn doors. Zoo keepers said elephants, giraffes, kudu, bonobos, coatis, gorillas and Aldabra tortoises all went to their respective barns.
However, a ringtail cat and two different species of owls were observed to be more active during the day. Zookeepers at the Dallas Zoo noticed that zebras and giraffes were running around during the eclipse, while chimpanzees were seen patrolling the zoo premises.
Birds such as flamingos and penguins formed groups before totality, while other birds began to cool off. Dr. Robert Shumake, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Zoo, told CBS News, “You can hear they’re completely quiet now – no peeking and no movement.”
Zookeepers observed a warthog standing watch at the back gate during the eclipse and leopards strolling on top of their grassland.
Solar eclipse 2024 occurred on Monday, April 8. It appeared in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other parts of North America. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will become dark as if it is morning or evening.
This year, it was a rare total solar eclipse where the Moon will completely cover the Sun and the view will appear as a ring of fire.
