Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, “They (Nehru-Gandhi family) call themselves accidental Hindus”, attacking Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and making an oblique reference to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Speaking to ANI on April 29, the BJP leader said: “People who do not know the history and geography of India will definitely make such irrelevant comments. When I talk about Rahul Gandhi, I remember That once upon a time these people called themselves Accidental Hindus.”

“India has a rich tradition and our saints, Maharajas and every section of the society have contributed in their respective fields…Rahul ji never remembered the atrocities of the Mughals, who left no stone unturned in Islamizing India. Chhodi…It is unfortunate that people who call themselves accidental Hindus cannot feel proud about India’s heritage…” he further said.
Did Nehru really say ‘accidental Hindu’?
According to Alt News fact check, the first reference to this alleged comment appeared in 1959 and can be attributed to politician NB Khare. Academics credit Khare for making this comment in the context of Jawaharlal Nehru.

Fact Check found that the resolution passed by the Indian National Congress in 1929 demanding ‘Complete Swaraj’ from the British contained Nehru’s own words about being a Hindu. In his Congress presidential speech in Lahore, Nehru said the following on being a Hindu:
“I was born a Hindu, but I do not know to what extent it is appropriate to call myself a Hindu or to speak on behalf of Hindus. But in this country birth still matters and by right of birth I am a Hindu. I dare to submit to the leaders of India. It should be their prerogative to lead in generosity, not only good morality, but often good politics and good expediency and it is incomprehensible to me that Hindus can ever live in freedom. Adityanath’s comments came amid a heated exchange of words between the BJP and Congress after Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleged that Gandhi “does not remember the people (Mughals) who destroyed our religious places”.

On this, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh accused Modi of “maliciously distorting” every statement of Gandhi to “inflame communal sentiments”.

“The Prime Minister has gone beyond being pathetic. He maliciously and mischievously twists every statement of Rahul Gandhi to stoke, incite and inflame communal prejudices and sentiments.
