During the promotions of her upcoming film Haq, Yami in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India spoke about how life finds a way to reward one. As the actor said ‘Not through awards, probably, ever’, the interviewer asked him if being nominated and not winning bothered him. Yami said no, and added, “As much as I have understood the Bhagavad Gita, what Lord Krishna says to Arjun is true. It is not that I am detached like the most ideal human being, but if you have the ability to be detached from success and have the fear of losing or look for validation from someone else’s perspective, then you are fine. I have stopped seeking any kind of validation from anyone. If I get an award then I am a very good actress, otherwise maybe not. Not like that. (It’s not that if I get that award I’m only a good actress, otherwise I’m not).”

Yami won several debut awards for her debut film, Vicky Donor in 2013. Since then, she has earned nominations for major awards including the Filmfare Awards and IIFA for her performances in Bala, A Thursday and Article 370, but has not won any awards yet. However, the actor shared that she now draws her validation from the audience’s reaction. “The truth is that my audience loves me, some directors and producers are willing to take a dig at me, what’s a bigger reward than when the audience lifts you up. Baaki sab aana jaana hai. Darshan ko hi patna hai (There is no greater reward than your audience lifting you up. The rest is old news. The audience knows). If it makes someone happy, great!”
