World Breastfeeding Week 2024: Breastfeeding and maternal neurological health; what we need to know

Date:

World Breastfeeding Week 2024: Breastfeeding is extremely important for a baby’s development. Breast milk helps nourish the baby and provide the nutrients required for growth and development. However, the impact of breastfeeding on the mother’s neurological health is rarely discussed. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Praveen Gupta, Principal Director and Head of Neurology, Fortis Hospital, said, “Breastfeeding has been shown to promote the secretion of oxytocin, a hormone that plays a key role in maternal bonding and reducing stress. This hormone not only helps in milk ejection but also contributes to a calming effect, reduces anxiety and promotes emotional stability.”
