Tamil Nadu: Palaniswamy (EPS) of AIADMK General Secretary Edappi (EPS) is in the national capital on 25 March, which speculates about the party’s return to the Bharatiya Democratic Alliance (NDA) folds. According to sources, EPS can meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital.
Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazgam (AIADMK) said in its official edition that EPS is in Delhi to visit the news party office. Party Building, Built for 10 crores, EPS was inaugurated through video conferencing from Chennai.
However, according to a report The Indian ExpressQuoting sources, the meeting between EPS and Amit Shah may pave the way for the party’s return to the NDA. The EPS has been opposing the alliance since September 2023, when both parties participated for several reasons – among them Annamalai of Primary BJP’s Tamil Nadu President.
In February, AIADMK denied any possibility of an alliance with BJP. The party’s stand was made in a statement released in a day when 16 AIADMK leaders joined the BJP in New Delhi. But Amit Shah did not reject the possibility of a synergy, in an interview to a local daily.
Relationship relationship in 2023
Before EPS’s visit to Delhi, there has been a discussion between AIADMK and BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu. Among other things, EPS is also expected to explain to senior BJP leaders in Delhi about three language policy and the impact of upcoming delimitation.
This development comes ahead of the 2026 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.
AIADMK formed an alliance with BJP after the death of Supremo J Jayalalithaa in 2016. But after the 2019 Lok Sabha DMK sweep and 2021 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, EPS distanced away from the alliance in 2023.
There is no option
Now, as the report states, AIADMK, has no other option. But to align with the BJP, if it wants to be present in the state’s political scenario. In addition, actor Vijay launched his own party – Tamilga Vetri Kajgam (TVK) is also one of the factors running AIDMK’s change in the heart.
The party has allegedly placed some conditions on the alliance. The party wants the BJP to form a high-power governing committee to oversee coordination between parties. The Authority, the Indian Express report states, Tamil Nadu will beat the BJP President’s Annamalai.
AIADMK also wants the BJP party to give up any decline towards rebels TTV Dhinkaran and O Panneraselvam. The BJP had earlier urged Palaniswami to bring the rebels back into cement party cracks in AIADMK folds.
Left without any alternative, AIADMK is designed to rethink its alliance with the BJP if it wants to survive in the political scenario of Tamil Nadu.
The BJP, which has almost no footprint in Tamil Nadu, needs a coalition partner before the 2026 assembly elections.
“Except BJP, all parties have supported this (resolution against Triple language). We are firm that we will never accept it (Triple Language Policy). I came to know that opposition leaders EPS went to Delhi, but whom he is going to meet?
