Coronation saga
Historian Chandrashekhar Sharma tells that Maharana Pratap was crowned in Gogunda town, about 35 km from Udaipur. His father Maharana Udai Singh died on 28 February 1572. After this, Rana Pratap was crowned near the Mahadev temple step well in the cremation ground of Gogunda. This historic step well is still present today. The jagirdars of Mewar were afraid that after the death of Udai Singh, someone else might take the title of Maharana. For this reason, Rana Pratap was crowned in the cremation ground itself.
Maharana left the palace and started living in the forest
When Maharana Pratap was crowned, he even left the palace to maintain the pride of Mewari. Along with him, his queens also left the comforts of the palaces and started living in the forest. Maharana Pratap built his armory in the caves of Mayra near Gogunda. After this, he fought the Mughal army in the battle of Haldighati.
