Why are flu vaccines important for children?

Dr. Anish Pillai replied, “Influenza or flu is a contagious viral infection that affects the airways and lungs of the child and is the most common respiratory illness seen in children during monsoon. Flu causes discomfort in children, causes absence from school and impacts their quality of life. Additionally, some children may exhibit severe symptoms such as shortness of breath, hypoxia, irritability, and loss of appetite, requiring hospitalization. The flu virus is released when a person with flu coughs, sneezes or talks. Therefore, being around an infected person may increase the risk of getting flu.

He said, “Droplets in the air can spread up to about 7 feet and reach people nearby. Therefore, for children going to daycare or school, monsoon season becomes a constant cycle of repeated flu infections and recoveries. The flu vaccine not only protects the child but also protects those around them, including extended family members and classmates. Flu vaccines are carefully developed each year to target prevalent strains to ensure the best protection. The traditional flu shot contains inactivated (killed) flu viruses (influenza A and B), making it extremely safe and effective.

Dr. Anish Pillai elaborates, “Parents should not skip flu vaccination due to fear of side effects, which are minimal except fever, headache and swelling at the injection site for a day or two. Getting vaccinated annually against influenza will increase immunity and prevent serious symptoms or complications. So, parents, what are you waiting for? Make an appointment with a pediatrician today and get your child vaccinated without any delay to help him have a healthy monsoon. Other measures: To prevent flu, parents should encourage children to cover their mouth and nose when coughing/sneezing, wash hands regularly, maintain a safe distance from people, wear a mask when unwell, avoid going to crowded places or One should be taught to avoid being around sick people and eat food. Nutritious diet to increase immunity.”
