South Korea’s First Lady Kim Kyon Hee is a businesswoman who founded the cultural content company Kovana Contents in 2007. In an interview with Donga Business Review in 2015, Kim said about his business, “I was interested in art since a young age. Naturally, a desire arose in my mind to start a business that could spread the value of art.” According to another media house, The Straits Times, his company organizes art exhibitions and has organized exhibitions for many major artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Marc Chagall and Mark Rothko. Kim married Yoon Suk Yeol in March 2012. When her husband assumed the post of President of South Korea in May 2022, she became the first lady of the country. Animal rights advocate Kim advocated a ban on the consumption of dog meat in South Korea.

Whereas a group of 16 professors had claimed that Kim’s PhD thesis was a case of plagiarism. The controversies regarding Kim do not end here. There are allegations that he and President Yoon exerted undue influence on the ruling People’s Power Party (PPP) to select candidates for parliamentary by-elections in 2022. Investigations by mainstream media revealed that Kim had interfered in the candidates’ nomination process at the request of Myung Tae-kyun, a political broker and founder of a polling agency.

Allegation of stock manipulation
Kim is also accused of stock manipulation related to South Korean import company Deutsche Motors. In a public apology on November 7, President Yoon admitted, “Neither my wife nor I have done anything inappropriate.” Amidst these scandals related to the First Lady, President Yoon’s approval rating has fallen to 17 percent.

According to the report of Chosun Daily, the opposition has targeted Yoon Suk Yeol and claimed that his decision to impose martial law was politically motivated. He accused the President of trying to divert attention from demanding a special investigation into corruption allegations against the First Lady. Last week, Yoon Suk Yeol vetoed for the third time a bill demanding a special counsel investigation into allegations of stock price manipulation and influence-peddling involving his wife.

There is internal disagreement within the ruling PPP regarding this bill. There is speculation that some MPs from the ruling party may vote in favor of the proposed bill. “The sudden declaration of martial law just a week before the re-election has certainly shifted public attention to the first lady,” a political observer told The Chosun Daily.
