Employees are usually unhappy that they are not paid more. But something strange is happening in Myanmar. When some shop owners there increased the salary of their employees, they were sent to jail. The government has ordered to search for such people who are offering more salary to the employees. You must be thinking that maybe there is some such law there, but it is not so. Increasing salary in Myanmar is not illegal at all. But there is one reason due to which the government is very upset.
According to the New York Times report, Pyae Phyo Zaw, who lives in Mandalay, Myanmar, owns three shops. He deals in mobile phones. This year he earned well, so he increased the salaries of his employees. The employees were happy. But the Myanmar Army did not like this. They immediately arrested Pyae Phyo Zaw. They also locked his shops. Not only this, they accused him of inciting riots in the country. Pyae Phyo Zaw is not alone. At least 10 other shopkeepers have been jailed because the news spread online that they were increasing the salaries of their employees. Such allegations have been made against them that can lead to a jail term of up to three years. An employee of Pyae Phyo Zaw’s shop said, we were very happy with the salary increase, but now our shop has been closed. We are not getting any salary. Everyone is very disappointed with this.
But why is action being taken
In fact, Myanmar has been facing an economic crisis since the army took power in 2021. No country is ready to help it. People are revolting against the army. This has made the situation even worse. Armed ethnic groups have taken over more than half of the country. They run their own rule. They are occupying many military bases and posts. This has disrupted trade with China, India and Thailand. The government believes that inflation is rising because more money is going into the hands of the people. They have started buying more goods. There is a shortage of goods, which is increasing prices. If people do not have money, they will spend less, which will control inflation. For this reason, the army considers the salary hike to be inciting unrest. The army has put up a notice outside a shop in Pyae Phyo Zaw. In which it is written, ‘This shop has been locked due to disturbing the peace in the community’.
Many more absurd solutions
This is not the only strange case of saving the economy. Earlier, the army had ordered to buy less of major food items like rice, meat and cooking oil. The purchase of gold was stopped. The purchase of foreign currency was banned. Restrictions have also been imposed on sending money abroad. These rules are being implemented very strictly. 35 people who sold gold, foreign currency and foreign real estate have been arrested. 11 people, including the heads of seven big rice producers, were arrested only because they sold rice at double the price.
