A new book reportedly reveals that Prince William briefly broke up with Kate Middleton three years before they were engaged. According to the New York Post, Robert Jobson’s new biography “Catherine, The Princess of Wales” sheds light on the circumstances behind the royal couple’s separation in 2007.
In his book, Jobson wrote that “Catherine knew William was in no hurry to propose, and in fact, she was prepared to wait until William was ready. After all, they were in love – weren’t they?”
The book reportedly states that when William unexpectedly cancelled their 2006 New Year’s Eve plans, Kate knew “something was wrong.” Shortly after, William called his then-girlfriend and broke up with her.
He reportedly said they both needed “a little space” to “find our own way” and that he couldn’t promise to propose, reports the New York Post.
Excerpts from the book read, “In an emotionally charged 30-minute conversation, the two admitted they were on ‘different pages’… This was a devastating blow to Katherine, who felt doubly disappointed at having been abandoned over the phone.”
Following the “split,” William reportedly headed to London’s Mahiki nightclub and Kate headed to Dublin with her mother Carole Middleton and to Ibiza with a friend.
But eventually William had “second thoughts” and he reunited with Kate at a “freakin’ naughty” themed costume party hosted by jockey Sam Waley-Cohen, the report said.
“She arrived dressed as a nurse and William decided to go straight up to her,” Jobson wrote. “They spent the first part of the evening in deep conversation and then headed to the dance floor, where they kissed.”
After reconciling in 2007, William and Kate got engaged in 2010. They married at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011. The Prince and Princess of Wales have three children.
The couple reportedly opened up about their short breakup in an interview around the time they got engaged. At the time, William said, “We were both very young, it was at university, we were both kind of discovering ourselves and doing different characters and things.”
“It was a huge effort to find our way and we were getting bigger, and so we needed some space and things like that, and it worked out for the better,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kate added, “…I think at the time I wasn’t very happy with it, but actually, it made me a stronger person…”
