New Delhi. The process of filing challan for violation of traffic rules in the national capital will now be as easy as online shopping. Delhi government will provide vehicle owners the facility to pay challan through WhatsApp and API. Under this new system, a message of challan details and fine amount will be sent to the violator through WhatsApp. Clicking on the payment option given in the message will take the user directly to the payment gateway, where the challan can be paid through various options including BHIM UPI.
Delhi Government has now issued a tender for selection of service provider to create a system for smart payment of challan. This tender can be filled till 30th October, while the online pre-bid meeting will be held on 1st November. According to the tender, messages will be sent in both Hindi and English languages in the new system. In these, messages of traffic rules violators will be found in various media formats like picture, PDF, and video.

Payment will be made online
UPI apps like Google Pay and PhonePe etc. will also be added to this new facility. If this happens, people will be able to pay the challan more easily. User will get push notification on every new challan after challan payment. Initially this facility will be applicable only on transport related challans. Since WhatsApp has a push message feature, it will remind people of challans regularly, just like banks or other companies do to remind them of the outstanding amount.
Now notifications are received late
At present, traffic challan is paid through the government’s transport e-challan website. According to officials, many vehicle owners do not receive SMS notification of challan for weeks. This problem will end with the introduction of the new system.
1000-1500 challans are issued daily
There are more than 82 lakh vehicles in Delhi. Around 1,000-1,500 e-challans are issued daily. This number may increase after Delhi government launches AI-based traffic violation booking system. There are now plans to add the use of WhatsApp to the existing web portal system of the Transport Department, as WhatsApp has now become the most common communication medium. If a user’s WhatsApp is not registered, the invoice will be sent through SMS and registered email.
