In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Nivedita Kaul, Principal Consultant, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi, said, “Modern life is inherently stressful, and when this stress is coupled with unhealthy lifestyle choices This increases the risk of chronic diseases including cancer. Diet is a major determinant among these. A diet rich in ultra-processed foods and saturated fats is a primary contributor to various diseases.

The most important lifestyle factor associated with increased risk of cervical cancer is sexual promiscuity – having multiple sexual partners increases the chance of acquiring HPV. Not using barrier contraceptives such as condoms further increases this risk. In addition to these specific factors, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and alcohol consumption can increase the overall risk of developing cervical and other types of cancer. The doctor further shared some healthy lifestyle tips that we should follow to stay healthy and keep the risk of cervical cancer at bay.

maintain a healthy diet: Eat a nutrient-rich diet rich in whole grains, vegetables and fruits, while minimizing processed foods and items with preservatives or chemicals.

Exercise regularly: Engage in mental exercises like aerobic exercise, strength training and meditation. These activities help maintain a healthy body weight, which is an important factor in preventing chronic diseases, including cancer.

Avoid smoking and alcohol: Reducing or eliminating tobacco and alcohol use significantly reduces the risk of various diseases.
