Toronto. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation from the post on Monday. He also mentioned the term “internal fight” in his last press conference as PM. Explaining this, he told the media that he “may not be the best choice” in the next elections.
Trudeau said he has asked the president of his Liberal Party to begin the process of selecting a new leader. Trudeau was facing increasing dissatisfaction with his leadership. The finance minister’s sudden resignation late last year signaled turmoil within the Trudeau-led government.
Shortly before the resignation announcement, an official had said that Parliament would remain suspended till March 24. The session of Parliament was to resume on 27 January. During this period, the leadership of the Liberal Party will be elected.
Trudeau became the second youngest prime minister in Canadian history when elected PM in 2015, and was planning to run for a fourth term in next year’s election, despite growing discontent against him within his own party. He said, “I have always been motivated by my love for Canada” and repeatedly described himself as a fighter.
Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who sparked talk of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation by resigning last month, thanked him for his years of service and wished him the best for the future. Freeland, who has been Trudeau’s most powerful minister, is also being considered a possible candidate for the post of prime minister.
In his resignation remarks, Trudeau called Freeland “a wonderful political partner” and said he wanted her to remain his deputy prime minister. When reporters asked him what happened between them, he replied, “I am not one of those people who are in the habit of sharing personal conversations.”
