New Delhi. Facebook, Instagram, Threads and Messenger – all platforms operated by Meta – suddenly shut down for thousands of users in India and several other countries on Tuesday night. Outage tracking website DownDetector gave this information. Now Facebook’s parent company Meta has issued an official statement in this regard and said that they are looking into the matter.
Meta’s head of communications Andy Stone tweeted, “We know people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on it right now.” Users were having trouble loading the Facebook and Instagram apps, sending messages and refreshing their search feed.
According to the website, there were more than 300,000 reports of outage on Facebook, while there were more than 20,000 reports on Instagram. Many users logged out of their Facebook accounts and were not able to log back in due to the outage. However, after about 50 minutes, the services of Facebook and Instagram started working properly again.
DownDetector tracks outages by collecting status reports from multiple sources, including complaints submitted by users on its platform. A large number of users could have been affected by the outage.
WhatsApp, which is also owned by Meta, has not yet reported any outages. However, recently launched X rival Threads also went down. With a pause of minutes, people moved to Elon Musk-owned X, where #InstagramDown, Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg are trending on the social media platform. Users have also shared memes on the global server issue.
