The study found that people who had a regular workout routine had reduced hangover symptoms. Here’s how exercise can ease hangover pain.

There are plenty of hangover cures available – from drinking a glass of wine to getting over it, eating a greasy snack or taking a bath. A recent study led by Athley Redwood-Brown and Jane Wilson of Nottingham Trent University suggests that physical exercise may be a hangover cure. The study was conducted on 1676 undergraduate students who had had a hangover at least once in the past three months.

The results showed that the severity and frequency of hangovers were directly related to the amount of alcohol consumed. However, it was further observed that the severity of these hangovers was significantly reduced in those who regularly engaged in vigorous physical activity – such as running. It also emphasized that high levels of exercise can reduce the severity of hangovers.

How does exercise help reduce hangover symptoms?

controls pain response: Hangovers are associated with headaches, muscle aches, and pain sensitivity. However, exercise can help release endorphins which can act as natural painkillers for the body and reduce pain perception.

better quality sleep: Hangovers were related to poor quality sleep – however, exercise can lead to better sleep and improve sleep patterns.

better metabolism: Regular exercise can improve the body’s overall metabolism, leading to better processing of alcohol.

reduces inflammation: Alcohol is an inflammatory response to the body – whereas, exercise has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce hangover-related discomfort.

The study further states that exercise can improve hangover symptoms, but it is not a cure. The best way to avoid a hangover is to drink alcohol in moderation, or avoid alcohol consumption altogether.
