Recently, a video went viral in which the person claimed that we should blow dry our hair instead of air drying it. The caption in the video also mentioned the surprising benefits of blow drying hair. According to the viral video, blow drying can help reduce humidity by drying hair quickly, thereby preventing potential hair damage. It also helps prevent hair breakage by drying it out, which reduces humidity. Damp hair can accelerate fungal growth – blow drying can help reduce that risk. The video further claims that proper blow drying can help reduce frizz. An excerpt from the caption reads, “Always use a hair serum before blow drying and always dry on cool temperatures (hot temperatures can damage your hair)

However, how much truth is there in this statement? In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Vichitra Sharma, consultant dermatology at Amrita Hospital Faridabad, said, “No, this is not true. Heat can damage hair and make them dry – easily breakable. In summers we can air dry but in winters we can use low heat/cool settings to prevent heat damage.”
The dermatologist further explained what methods we should follow to get healthy hair:

Considerations About Air Drying
When opting for air drying, it is important to avoid tools such as bristle brushes, rough handling of the hair and brushing them vigorously as the increased stress due to the weakened state of wet hair can lead to hair breakage. Friction from cotton towels or other abrasive fabrics can also damage the cuticles, leading to damage. To minimize this, a microfiber towel, which is gentle on the hair, can be used. While air drying, serums can be used
Protection from heat and UV exposure:
A protectant should be used whether or not heat is used during the drying process. This is because many heat protectants also provide UV protection, which is essential since the sun’s rays can be damaging to hair.

Blow drying technique:
For blow drying, it is essential to start with a heat protectant and use a cool/low heat setting after using a microfiber towel to remove excess water. And apply a serum and sometimes oil, such as mousse, gel or thickening cream, to the base of the hair. Use a concentrator nozzle to direct the air flow from the roots to the ends. And use a wide-toothed comb/brush. This technique smooths the cuticles beneath the hair strand, increasing strength and shine.
