Kuala Lumpur. The Malaysian Navy said two military helicopters collided during a training session on Tuesday, killing all 10 people on board. The navy said in a brief statement that the accident occurred while the helicopters were taking part in training at a naval base in northern Perak state in preparation for the navy’s 90th anniversary celebrations. The Navy’s 90th anniversary is next month.
According to the statement, “All the people aboard both the helicopters died on the spot.” The Navy said in the statement that the bodies have been sent to the hospital for identification of the deceased. In a video circulated on social media, several helicopters were flying in ‘formation’ at low altitude when one helicopter collided with the ‘rotor’ of another aircraft, due to which both the helicopters collided with each other.
A local police officer, on condition of anonymity, said that the video footage is absolutely genuine. According to the police, the helicopters were so badly damaged that they could not be identified. Police said that rescue workers also searched the debris to find the bodies. Police said that the dead included three women and seven men.
