In a recent episode of The Human Upgrade Podcast, health science entrepreneur and author Dave Asprey spoke with Doctor of Medicine and carnivore dietitian Paul Saladino about the intricacies of diet development, overall health, and metabolic science. During his discussion, Dave called veganism a ‘death cult’, and now a section of social media users have criticized him for ‘another bull attack on veganism’. What was said against vegetarianism on the podcast?
“Vegetarianism is about death. This is a death cult. I am just saying that as a true vegetarian, it (vegetarianism) is a deep hatred of the life and death cycle. You’re trying to stop it; But if you just do basic math on the number of deaths that have given you your Impossible Burger (Impossible Foods is one of the biggest names in plant-based protein today), it’s a lot more than a cow. So you have to deliberately ignore it. This idea of ’I won’t eat things with a face’, like why aren’t worms and insects sacred? They are and they are being killed by industrial agriculture. Things like glyphosate cause earthworms to visit levels 300 times below acceptable levels in the soil. So, if you really respect the circle of life, you really protect the cows,” Dave said.
Paul Saladino also said in the podcast, “Vegetarianism is a complete lie. There is no life on this earth without killing something… It is not better for life, it is not better for the earth, it is not humane. The intentions (of vegetarianism) are good – to do less harm and be kind but…”
How did Instagram respond?
When Dave shared a clip from the podcast linking veganism to death on his Instagram account, many people took to the comments section of his post, and some were not happy.
One Instagram user commented, “80 percent of the world’s soy is fed to animals; So if you really cared about these bugs like you say you do, you wouldn’t eat livestock…” Another wrote, “Such nonsense. Cow vs worm…”
‘Stop bringing BS to attack veganism’
One person said, “The vegan diet is not based on the Impossible Burger or other fake meats!” Another commented, “But isn’t this a little cruel? Industrial animal farms. One comment also read, “The food you eat accounts for more than 70 percent of all crops grown.”
Another Instagram user commented, “Another BS (bulls***) attack on veganism! I have news for you: impossible does not equal veganism! Stop coming up with BS to attack veganism! “By the way, plants don’t have nervous systems, so they’re not the same thing!”
What is vegetarianism?
According to the Vegan Society, veganism is a way of life that aims to exclude animal exploitation and cruelty as much as possible. It promotes the use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals and humans. Celebrities like Billie Eilish and Richa Chadha have publicly shared how veganism has transformed their health, energy levels and mental state. Click here to know more.
