Bharat Ratna 2024 Award List:
India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna Award, was instituted in 1954 to honor outstanding contributions in all fields of human endeavor regardless of gender, ethnicity, status or occupation. The Bharat Ratna Awards honor the outstanding achievements of India’s most eminent people. Karpoori Thakur, MS Swaminathan, Charan Singh, PV Narasimha Rao and LK Advani were awarded Bharat Ratna in 2024.
India launches its first space docking mission
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) reported that the two spacecraft successfully separated and were placed in the proper orbit on December 31. The spacecraft will help ISRO demonstrate space docking, a key technology for future space missions. Later, ISRO released stunning images of the slow-motion liftoff and onboard scenes of the Spadex launch.
Murlikant Petkar to receive Arjuna Award for Lifetime Achievement
The Sports Ministry made some additional adjustments and gave the prestigious Arjuna Award (Lifetime) to India’s first gold medalist at the Paralympic Games, para-swimmer Muralikant Rajaram Petkar, 52 years after creating history in Heidelberg, Germany. On January 17, 2025, President of India Draupadi Murmu will present the award to 80-year-old Petkar at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Petkar was awarded the Padma Shri award in 2018.

On January 2, men’s hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh, shooter Manu Bhaker, chess world champion D Gukesh and para-athlete Praveen Kumar were announced as this year’s recipients of the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, the country’s highest sporting honour. . The ‘Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award’ is given to an athlete for his or her most notable and extraordinary achievement during the last four years.
Koneru Humpy wins historic rapid chess world title
On 29 December, Grandmaster Koneru Humpy defeated Indonesia’s Irene Sukandar to win the FIDE Women’s World Rapid Chess title, capping an incredible year for Indian chess. In 2019, Humpy won the event in Georgia, and is the second player after Indian No. 1 Xu Wenjun of China to win the title more than once. Hampi’s achievement capped an incredible year for the chess community after De Gukesh defeated China’s Ding Liren to win the Classical-style World Championship in Singapore.
