External Affairs Ministry issued advisory warning Indian citizens about job scams in Laos, Cambodia
In the wake of increasing incidents of job scams targeting Indian citizens, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday issued an advisory warning Indian citizens against the increasing number of fraudulent job offers by scammers in Southeast Asian countries including Laos and Cambodia. The advisory highlights the presence of fake agents in the area, who lure individuals with promises of employment opportunities, and stresses the need for caution. These fake offers for posts like ‘Customer Support Services’ and ‘Digital Sales and Marketing Executives’ come with perks like high salary, visa facility and hotel accommodation. However, people later find themselves trapped in harsh working conditions, facing physical and mental torture.
Death toll in Mumbai hoarding collapse reaches 16, Bhavesh Bhinde arrested
After a three-day-long rescue operation at the site of the horrific Ghatkopar hoarding collapse in Mumbai, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani announced that the rescue operation ended on May 16. 16 people lost their lives when the hoarding fell. A retired general manager of Air Traffic Control (ATC) and his wife were rescued from their car stuck under the hoarding. The billboard measures approximately 1,338 square meters (14,400 sq ft), which is more than nine times the maximum allowed size for a billboard. The Crime Branch team of Mumbai Police arrested Bhinde, director of advertising agency Ego Media Pvt Ltd, which was responsible for putting up the hoardings in Ghatkopar area of Mumbai.
Neeraj Chopra won gold in Federation Cup
Indian athlete and Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw event at the Federation Cup. The 26-year-old athlete struggled in the first three rounds of the competition, however, he took the lead in the fourth round with a remarkable throw of 82.27m. Meanwhile, Neeraj last competed in a domestic competition at the same event on March 17, 2021, where he won the gold medal with a throw of 87.80 metres. His personal best and national record is 89.94 metres, however, he is yet to touch the 90 meter mark.
NCW promises action against alleged attack on Swati Maliwal
The National Commission for Women recently addressed the Ex and said it would send an investigation team to probe the alleged attack on AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal. He also mentioned that they will send a formal letter to Delhi Police to send an action taken report on this matter. Swati Maliwal alleged that Arvind Kejriwal’s close aide Vibhav Kumar assaulted her at his official residence on the instructions of the CM.
Supreme Court seeks response from Election Commission on petition to release voter turnout data
The Supreme Court sought response from the Election Commission of India (ECI) within a week on an NGO’s plea seeking direction to release polling station-wise voter turnout data on its website within 48 hours of the Lok Sabha elections. However, the bench said that the Election Commission should be given some reasonable time to respond to the plea and the petition and scheduled the hearing before an appropriate bench during the summer vacation on May 24, a day before the sixth phase of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections.
