These aspirants, many of whom are determined to become IAS, IPS or IFS officers, are often seen studying in small, confined spaces.

In some cases, these rooms are as little as 10 square feet in size, reflecting the intense focus and sacrifice involved in their preparation.

Prayagraj, famous for its cultural and historical significance, is also a hub for aspiring civil servants. In the busy areas of Colonelganj, Katra, Manfordganj, Daraganj, Chhota Baghada, Bada Baghada, Salori, Govindpur and Daraganj Allahpur, the streets are packed with students preparing for the UPSC exams. These aspirants, many of whom are determined to become IAS, IPS or IFS officers, are often seen studying in small, confined spaces. In some cases, these rooms are just 10 square feet, reflecting the intense focus and sacrifice involved in their preparation.

The streets are crowded with young men and women, their eyes brimming with dreams of clearing the UPSC exams and securing a coveted government position. While some students aim to reach top positions in the civil services, others, driven by a desire to alleviate the worries of their families, are willing to take up roles such as government clerks through the SSC exams if necessary. The perseverance and ambition of these individuals underline Prayagraj’s role as an important training ground for the country’s future leaders.

You must be wondering why Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, is included in discussions about exam preparations even though many students go to bigger cities like Delhi for their studies. The answer lies in the unique benefits that candidates get in Prayagraj.

Every month, students from various parts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar come to Prayagraj with the hope of getting a government job. When asked why they choose Prayagraj over cities like Delhi, Patna or Lucknow, they often cite financial constraints. The cost of living and studying in big cities can be very high, making Prayagraj an attractive option due to its low cost.

Abhishek Yadav, a student preparing for the UPSC exam, says that Prayagraj is more affordable for students like him. Room rent and travel expenses are significantly lower here, allowing students to better manage their finances while focusing on their studies. In contrast, the high cost of living and transportation in big cities can be a significant barrier to success.

Other students like Arun Yadav, Abhishek Yadav, Abhinav and Manoj Tiwari share small rooms, make do with each other’s textbooks and often sleep in the same room. When asked about the cramped conditions, they reply that their main focus is on their studies, not comfort. “We have come here to study, not to sleep,” says Arun Yadav, adding that sleeping less will give them a better chance of achieving their goals.

Dinesh, who has been preparing for competitive exams for several years, says the same thing. “We sleep, eat and study in this small room – that’s our world,” he says. For these students, limited space is a small price to pay for the opportunity to realise their dreams.
