New Delhi. On Wednesday evening, due to a major technical problem, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services were disrupted across India, so that users could not do digital transactions. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which oversees UPI operations, accepted this problem and assured the users that the problem has been resolved.
Many popular UPI apps, such as Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm, were impressed. Some banks, such as ICICI banks, were functioning normally, while others, such as HDFC Bank, were interrupted. Users made complaints about failed transactions and connectivity problems on Downdetector, which tracks service outage.
Who destroys UPI?
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is a payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and is controlled by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This allows users to send and receive money immediately using their phone number or unique UPI IDS. Unlike other payment methods such as National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) and IMDIT Payment Service (IMPS), UPI also allows users and merchants to send a message through their banking apps to request a payment.
What happened due to which the payment of crores of people got stuck?
After the UPI was down, millions of people moved to social media and complained about its down. On this, NPCI replied that this has happened due to some technical problem in UPI. The problem has been corrected and now UPI is working properly. Actually, due to the technical problem, it often happens that the website and online services come to a standstill. Something similar happened with UPI, which was fixed after some time.
Why is UPI Payment Mode so successful?
One of the main reasons behind the success of UPI is that it is completely free. Users can transfer money from NPCI at any time without any extra charge. Especially for small payments, it is very much used, because it does not have any minimum transaction limit. In addition, UPI also offers a convenient autopay feature, which allows users to set repeated payments for subscription, which makes transactions easier.
You must have seen that different UPI apps assign you different UPI IDS. This is because each app depends on different banking partners to process transaction. Your UPI ID depends on the bank linked to your account. Such as Google Pay includes the general UPI IDS “@Oksbi,” “@Okhdfcbank,” “@Okaxis,” and “@Okici”.
What to do users?
1. If this ever happens, until the problem is solved, users are advised to use alternative payment modes, such as net banking, debit/credit card or cash.
2. Wait for 48 hours. It may take some time to update your bank to be the last status update. This is why you must wait. Do not worry
3. After 48 hours, check the transaction status in the history section of your UPI app. The status will be updated either as successful or unsuccessful.
4. If the payment fails, then you should get refunds within 3 to 5 days.
5. If refund or status updates are not available even after 5-7 days, contact your bank customer support. Give them transaction details so that they can quickly solve the problem.
6. If the problem persists, then you can also take help from National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) Helpdesk.
Remember, your money is safe in the bank and will either go to the recipient’s account or you will get back. Be patient during this process and avoid trying again several times.
