Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said there are concerns about AI, but the government is focusing on using it for better governance and development.

Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said on Friday that Artificial Intelligence (AI) in India is still in its initial stage. Recognizing the concerns surrounding AI, he highlighted the government’s focus on exploring the potential of AI for better governance and development.

“We are in the early stages and we know that concerns exist,” Meghwal said at the launch event of Jindal Global Law School’s BA program in Artificial Intelligence and Law. However, our focus is on exploring how we can leverage AI for governance and development, which was the topic of discussion in today’s session.”

In a significant move, Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) at OP Jindal Global University (JGU) has launched India’s first graduate program in “Artificial Intelligence and Law”. Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Dutta, Attorney General R. Venkataramani, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and senior advocate Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi were present.

The new program focuses on the societal role of AI with an emphasis on “law and society”. Its interdisciplinary approach includes elements of social engineering, aiming to teach students how technology affects human social interactions and social outcomes. The course also introduces students to the basics of AI applications, helping them understand algorithmic functions, range of technologies, their benefits, drawbacks, and operational dynamics of AI systems.

“The goal of the program is not only to raise awareness of AI, but also to provide students with a structured understanding of how AI fits into social contexts, its regulation, and its social impact. He emphasized the interdisciplinary nature of the program which equips students with both the knowledge and practical skills to assess the social and legal impact of AI,” said Prof. O.P. Jindal Global University, Founder Vice-Chancellor. (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar said.
