Understand how tubeless tires work with the help of balloons and tape.

highlights

In tube tyres, there is a gap between the tube and the tyre.
In tubeless tyres, both of these are stuck to each other.
Tubeless tires are safer.

New Delhi. Now you can see tubeless tires in most of the vehicles. There is no separate tube inside tubeless tyres. It is made of a special kind of chemical and is stuck to the tire like a layer. The fact that the tube is completely stuck to the tire is what differentiates a tubeless tire from a tube tyre. But why was there a need for tubeless tires instead of tube tyres? In fact, when a nail or any sharp object pricks a tube tire, it bursts immediately. This increases the risk of accident. Secondly, if a tire bursts in an isolated place, it becomes difficult for the driver to take the vehicle to a mechanic.

Tubeless tires solve this problem. Tubeless tires do not burst. Even if a nail pricks them, the air comes out slowly. This gives the driver enough time to take the car to a mechanic and get the tire repaired. But why doesn’t the air come out of a tubeless tire quickly or why doesn’t it burst when there is a hole in the tyre?

Understand with the example of balloon
Take two balloons. Put tape on one of them and leave the other one without tape. First prick a nail in the balloon without tape. You will see that the balloon will burst immediately. Now hit a pin or nail in the other balloon where the tape is attached. You will see that the balloon will not burst. Even though air will slowly start coming out of it. Now the question is how did this happen?

what is the reason for this
When a nail pricks a balloon, the air inside it comes out rapidly. The thin layer of the balloon cannot bear this much air pressure and it also starts expanding rapidly. All this happens in a few microseconds and hence the balloon bursts instantly.

Why didn’t the taped balloon burst?
Even in a taped balloon, air comes out when a nail is pricked, but that air gets trapped between the tape and the layer of the balloon. Its leakage happens very slowly. Due to this the air in the balloon decreases but very slowly. Similarly, instead of tape, a thin layer of tube is pasted from inside the tyre. When a nail hits a tubeless tyre, air gets trapped in the stuck tire and tube and slowly starts leaking. Therefore the tire does not burst and can travel some distance comfortably even after being pricked by a nail.
