NCC as an optional subject will have 24 credit marks, which will be divided into six semesters.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a notification regarding the inclusion of NCC as a subject in the curriculum module in universities. Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have been directed to take appropriate steps to include this subject in the curriculum. Students will be given the option to choose NCC as an optional subject.

The main objective of including NCC in the curriculum is to connect students with NCC troops. The Director General of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) has stated that HEIS should be affiliated with NCC troops to offer NCC as an optional subject.

The UGC notification revealed that NCC can be offered as an optional subject only to students who have enrolled as NCC cadets. The government has allowed students to take NCC as an optional subject from 2021. The government aims to benefit cadets, including those from border areas where additional cadet numbers have been authorized as part of the overall border area expansion scheme. The move will also encourage the youth to help and contribute to nation building.

Under the National Education Policy 2020, the NCC curriculum for B and C certificates has been designed as per the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS). The NCC subject will have 24 credit points that will be divided into six semesters. The move is in line with the National Education Policy 2020, where students can choose subjects of their choice instead of being limited to the subjects offered by the institutions.

NCC has also been very beneficial for students in the last few years. Students who complete this subject and training get a certificate from NCC. If someone gets an NCC certificate, those candidates are given exemption in army, police and other government jobs. NCC certificate holders also get some allowances while applying for higher education in colleges and universities in India. Apart from this, scholarships are also provided to the candidates who join NCC for further studies.
