According to University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Jagadesh Kumar, students with a four-year undergraduate degree can now directly appear for NET and pursue PhD.
To pursue PhD with or without Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), candidates will need a minimum of 75 per cent marks or equivalent grade in their four-year undergraduate course.
Till now, for the National Eligibility Test (NET), a candidate was required to have a master’s degree with minimum 55 percent marks.

“Candidates with a four-year undergraduate degree can now directly pursue PhD and appear for NET. Such candidates are allowed to appear in the subject in which they wish to pursue PhD, irrespective of the subject in which they have obtained a four-year undergraduate degree,” Kumar told PTI.

“Candidates pursuing a four-year or eight-semester undergraduate degree program must have a minimum of 75 per cent marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale, wherever the grading system is followed,” the UGC chairman said. “
As per the decision of UGC, relaxation of five percent marks or its equivalent grade may be given for candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), Divyang, Economically Weaker Section and other categories. He said, from time to time.
