On October 31, 1814, soldiers and officers of the British government attacked the Khalanga hill in Raipur area of Dehradun. Only 600 Gorkha soldiers, including 100 women and children, took up the front at Khalanga. In front of Veer Balbhadra Thapa’s brave army, a British army of 3500 soldiers stood, who had the most modern weapons of that time. Whereas, the Gorkha soldiers had only their traditional weapons, which included khukuri, sword and bow-arrow. Despite this, the brave Gorkhas defeated the British under the leadership of Veer Balbhadra Thapa. Seeing their bravery, the British themselves built a memorial in Khalanga.
