Arctic adventure now becomes easier: Greenland’s first international airport opens in Nuuk, direct flights will double the number of tourists
Greenland is opening a new international airport in the capital Nuuk as it expects to double the number of tourists arriving by air next year.
The Danish Civil Aviation and Railways Authority said on its website that the 2.2-kilometre (1.4 mi) runway was cleared late Wednesday after a series of test flights, paving the way for the airport to formally open on Thursday. .
The airport – the first international gateway into the Greenland capital – is seen as a game changer for local tourism, allowing larger planes to land in the Arctic country. Starting in June 2025, United Airlines Holdings Inc. will open a direct route to Nuuk from Newark, New York, while SAS AB and Icelandair Group HF have announced flights from other locations, including Copenhagen and Keflavík, Iceland’s largest airport. Previously, international flights landed further north, in the isolated town of Kangerlussuaq.
Greenland Airport CEO Jens Lauridsen told Danish media Finans that passenger traffic is expected to double from 50,000 annually to more than 100,000 in the first year. According to Visit Greenland, in 2023, fewer than 65,000 tourists arrived in Greenland by air, of which about 5,000 flew out of the capital’s existing small, domestic airport.
In 2026, two new airports are scheduled to open in Ilulissat and Qaqortoq.
