A child’s language development in the early years depends on daily interactions with their parents – exposure to screens can hinder this.

Screens have become an important part of our lives. From work to leisure and entertainment, screens are everywhere. However, when we spend too much time looking at screens, it naturally gets passed on to our children. But at their age, spending too much time on screens can affect their cognitive functioning and cause difficulties in language development. According to a study conducted by scientists in Estonia, parents who use screens a lot are more likely to have children who use screens a lot. This can lead to poor language skills in children.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Tiia Tuulviste from the University of Tartu, said that children tend to replicate their parents’ screen time patterns. Early language development in children occurs when they regularly interact with their parents. This ensures that children are actively involved in the conversation. However, when parents spend their time on screens, children also fall into that behaviour pattern.

The relationship between parents and children’s screen time

To understand this relationship, the researchers divided parents and children into three groups based on their exposure to screens. The study found that children exposed to screens had difficulty in language development – The study also found that children with less exposure to screens scored higher in grammar and vocabulary. Children with no exposure to screens performed very well in language development skills.

The study further states that while reading e-books or playing educational games may lead to creative development in children, the development of a child’s language skills in the first five years depends mainly on daily face-to-face interactions with their parents.
