Last year, the ranking of the premier institute in the same subject was in the 101-125 band. In the engineering stream, IISc secured 99th rank this year, an improvement from last year’s ranking in the 101-125 band. However, its 2025 ranking in life sciences and physical sciences subjects remains in the 201-250 band of last year.
This is the first time that an Indian institute of higher education – IISc – has ranked among the top 100 universities in the World University Rankings released every year since 2011. In the World University Rankings 2025 released in October last year, IISc topped Indian universities by securing a ranking in the 251-300 band.
A UK-based educational organisation, THE offers education across 11 subjects – Arts and Humanities; World University Rankings 2025 have been released; Business and Economics; Computer Science; Education Studies; Engineering; Law; Life Sciences; Medicine and health; Physics; Psychology and Social Sciences. US universities top nine of the 11 subject rankings, with Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford leading in three each. The World University Rankings 2025 ranks over 11,000 universities from around the world based on subjects. The methodology to rank universities by subject involves 18 performance indicators, divided into five areas: teaching (learning environment); research environment (volume, income and reputation); research quality (citation impact, research strength, research excellence, and research impact); International perspectives (staff, students and research); and industry (income and patents).
The subject ranking data of THE shows that the rankings of Indian universities have improved in various subjects.
A maximum of 87 Indian universities have secured their spots in engineering streams, with IISc topping the list at 99th position. Last year, 77 Indian institutions were in the list of top universities in engineering subjects. This year, 53 Indian universities have secured their place among the world’s top universities offering computer science subjects, compared to 47 in 2024, with IISc securing the 96th position.
This year, a total of 24 Indian higher education institutions feature in THE list of top universities in business and economics subjects, compared to 15 institutions in 2024. At the top, Amity University, Noida; KIIT University, Bhubaneswar; University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Dehradun and DU have secured their places in the 401-500 band in Business and Economics subjects this year.
In arts and humanities subjects, both Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU) have improved their rankings to 401-500 band from last year’s 501-600 band. For the first time, Jadavpur University is also in the list of World University Rankings for Arts and Humanities subjects with a 601 plus band ranking. Like last year, 14 Indian universities have once again secured a place among the world’s top institutions offering social science programs in 2025.
For the first time, India achieved a ranking in THE World University Rankings for the subject of Education Studies with DU in the 501-600 band. With a ranking in the 301 plus band, DU is the only Indian university to rank among the top universities in the world offering law subjects and psychology subjects with a ranking in the 401-500 band.
Savita Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Chennai with a ranking in the band of 251-300 leads the list of 28 India-based institutions that are among the top universities in the world offering medical and health subjects.
A total of 35 Indian institutions feature in the 2025 list of top universities offering life sciences and 63 Indian institutions also feature among the top institutions in the world offering physical sciences.
