You must have come across many such historical forts in the country whose artistry must have left you amazed. But today we will take you on a tour of a fort whose journey is as dangerous as it is thrilling. Your breath will stop with every step towards this fort, but along with it the desire to reach the destination will also increase. When we went there, we felt that we would not be able to reach home or not. But the journey was quite memorable.
Beautiful hills and forts are present in almost every district of Maharashtra. These forts have their own rich history. Also, these forts have become a special center of attraction for tourists over time. One of these forts is Harihar Fort.
Reaching Harihar Fort is not everyone’s cup of tea because many of its climbs are 90 degree steep at places. This fort is situated on the top of a beautiful mountain. And climbing here is very dangerous. Himalayan mountaineers have also considered it to be the most dangerous track in the world.
Harihar Fort is also known as Harshgad Fort. This fort is located in Nashik district of Maharashtra, about 48 km from Igatpuri and 60 km from Kasara. Harihar Fort is located 22 km from Trimbakeshwar and 45 km from Nashik.
Harshgarh Fort looks square from the bottom of the mountain, but its structure is like a prism. The structure is in a 90 degree straight line on both its sides and the third side of the fort is 75 degrees.
This fort is built on a mountain at a height of 170 meters. There are about 115 stairs of one meter width to go here. After climbing about 50 stairs comes the main gate Mahadwarwaja, which is still in very good condition.
After climbing up to the main gate, the stairs go through a rock and take you to the top of the fort. There are temples of Hanumanji and Shivji here. There is also a small pond near the temple, the water of which is so clean that it can be used for drinking. Going further from here, a small palace of two rooms is seen, in which 10-12 people can stay.
While climbing Harihar Fort, one needs to be especially cautious of monkeys. Because monkeys can snatch your belongings. Losing balance during the snatching by monkeys can even be life threatening. It can take you 4-5 hours to climb Harihar Fort and the same time to descend. The descent is done from the same route. Therefore, while descending, special care needs to be taken on the steep rocky stairs. The climb to Harihar Fort starts from Nirgunpada village located at its base.
There is also a homestay facility in Nirgudpada village. However, there are some dhabas on the roadside, where you will get many options for food and drinks. Whenever you come to Maharashtra, do visit here once.
Although people keep trekking to Harihar Fort throughout the year, but the best time to reach here is from October to February. If you want, you can visit Harihargarh Fort even during monsoon. In monsoon, you will get to see the surrounding greenery and spectacular natural scenery.
If you have planned to climb this Harihar Fort during monsoon, then you need to be very cautious, because climbing is very difficult at this time due to slippery conditions. The nearest airport to Harihargarh Fort is Nashik or Mumbai Airport. If you come by road, you will first have to take a cab from Mumbai to Nashik and Harihargarh Fort, 40 km from Nashik. You need a full day for trekking to the fort. If you are looking for an exciting place for trekking, then Harihar Fort is definitely a must visit.
