New Delhi. According to a report by IAMAI and KANTAR, the number of internet users in India is going to cross 900 million this year, mainly due to the increasing use of Indian languages for digital content.

According to the ‘Internet in India Report 2024’, the number of active internet users in India is expected to reach 886 million in 2024, a strong growth of 8 percent year-on-year.

According to the report, “The number of Internet users in India will cross 900 million by 2025, mainly due to the increasing use of Indian languages for digital content.”

Rural India, which has 488 million users, is leading this growth and now accounts for 55 percent of the total Internet population.

The report highlights the growing role of Indian languages in shaping internet consumption patterns.

Almost all Internet users (98 percent) accessed content in Indian languages, with Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam being the most popular as these languages are widely available.

More than half (about 57 percent) of urban internet users prefer to consume content in regional languages, indicating a growing demand for local language content across various platforms.

The report also notes that the digital gender gap in India is gradually narrowing, with women accounting for 47 percent of the country’s total internet users, the highest ever.

Female Internet users in rural India form a significant portion of shared device users, at around 58 percent. According to the report, this reflects significant progress in making digital access more inclusive and equitable over the years.

While Internet penetration continues to increase, its pace has slowed down, especially in urban areas, compared to the rapid growth seen in previous years. However, rural India is witnessing double the growth rate compared to urban areas, which shows the untapped potential in these areas.

Urban India is leading the adoption of non-traditional devices such as smart TVs and smart speakers, which are projected to grow by 54 percent between 2023 and 2024.

Additionally, mobile devices remain the main means of Internet access across both urban and rural demographics.

Rural India leads in online engagement for top activities, including OTT video and music streaming, online communication and social media usage, ahead of urban users in these categories. In contrast, activities like net commerce, digital payments and online education are still more prevalent among the urban population. PTI MBI DR
