New Delhi. Microsoft has decided to shut down the Skype. The shutter of this video calling service will fall in May this year. Microsoft bought it in 2011 for $ 8.5 billion. Skype played an important role in changing the way people talk online and at one time it became the identity of video calls. Microsoft said on Friday that it would shut down the Skype in May and transfer some of its services to its major videocracy and team application platform ‘Microsoft Teams’. Skype users will be able to use their current accounts to log in in ‘Teams’.

Microsoft has preferred teams over Skype over the years and the decision to close it shows the desire of this technical giant to streamline his main communication app, as it is facing many competitors.

Established in 2003
The Skype established by a group of engineers in 2003 in Tallin, Estonia was a pioneer in providing telephone call facility using the Internet instead of ‘Landline’. It was dependent on VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology that converts audio into a digital signal online. Skype also included video calls after online retailer eBay purchased service in 2005.

Microsoft bought Skype in 2011
In 2011, Microsoft acquired Skype. At that time, Skype had over 170 million users. Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer of that era had said, “Skype brand has become an action, which has become synonymous with video and voice communication.”

However, new video platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams gained rapidly popularity during the Kovid-19 epidemic, while Skype lost its grip. For this reason, Microsoft is now shutting down Skype and is fully focusing on the team, which has now become its main communication app.
