Canada has secured the number one rank for its cool weather and low population density, according to a new ‘Safest Places’ report published by US-based travel insurance company Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection.
The annual report is compiled with data from the Global Peace Index, the State Department’s travel safety ratings and the GeoSure Global Score of major cities around the world to identify places that could make the ranking. The company has been compiling this data continuously for nine years.
Defining a safe destination, the report states, “A safe destination was basically a place that is substantially free from terrorist activity. Then it became a place that was safe from the outbreak of disease. Now it is a place where all types of people can move freely without any discrimination or harassment.”
In 2023, Canada was ranked sixth and has slowly climbed up the charts throughout the year. The country also claimed first place in transportation, health measures, lack of violent criminal crimes, safety among women and LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities.
