New Delhi. French carmaker Citroen has pulled out of Australia. The company has been selling cars in France for more than 100 years, but now this journey is about to end. The company has said that it will not sell cars in Australia from November 1, 2024. Low sales are being cited as the reason for the company’s poor condition. The company’s condition had become so bad that in the first six months of this year, Citroen’s sales were only 87 units, which was less than the sales of luxury car company Ferrari.
Let us tell you that Stellantis Group’s car manufacturer Citroen is known for its budget cars. The company has a good hold in the French market, but its sales are not that good in many countries.
Cars were being sold in Australia since 1923
Citroen started selling cars in Australia just four years after its founding in France. In its 100-year history, Citroen launched many car models, but over time the company’s business became unprofitable. The company will stop selling all cars and SUVs in Australia from November 1, but will continue to provide service and maintenance.
Citroen has built 35 service stations across Australia. The company’s sales will continue until November 1, 2024. In Australia, Citroen used to sell models like C3, C4, C5 Aircross and C5X.
Stellantis is in trouble
Citroen’s parent company Stellantis is facing business losses in several countries these days. Many of Stellantis’ brands have reported below-average sales. There are reports that Stellantis is de-emphasizing brands that are not profitable. The group is also rethinking its position in low-performing markets such as Citroen in Australia.
The situation is not good in India either
Citroen sales in India are also not encouraging. Citroen is one of the lowest selling car brands in India with only 335 units sold in July 2024. The company has changed its strategy for the Indian market and launched the 2024 C3 with more features. Their new Basalt coupe SUV has been launched at an affordable Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom), undercutting all its rivals by a significant margin.
