The most expensive TV show in history has a production budget of approximately ₹500 crore per episode.
Television was long considered cinema’s poor cousin. Since the screen was small, the scale was also small. The biggest TV shows pale in comparison to big budget movies, be it in India or the West. But this changed with the advent of streaming as shows started getting bigger budgets and much larger canvases to play on. The biggest of them dwarfs even the most expensive films made in the world. ,Also read: The Rings of Power Season 2 Review: Much Improved But Still No Match to Jackson’s LOTR,
World’s most expensive TV show
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is the most expensive TV show in history. The show’s first season premieres on Amazon Prime Video in 2022, and Deadline reported that it will cost Amazon Studios $1 billion ( 8300 crores). The cost included the purchase of rights and promotion for Season 1. Collider reported that the production cost alone was $465 million (more 3800 crores). Each episode of the eight-episode season cost a staggering $58 million ( 480 crores).
How Rings of Power surpasses the big movies
The most expensive film to date is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which had a production budget of $447 million, less than even Rings of Power. The production cost of the three films of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy was only $260 million. In comparison, the spinoff show has progressed significantly.
Indian films are far behind. The most expensive Indian films – Kalki 2898 AD, RRR, and Adipurush – have production budgets between $70–75 million, which is only 1/15th of the landing cost of Season 1 of Rings of Power. In fact, the scale of the show is so huge that the per-episode production cost ($48 million) exceeds the budget of some of the biggest Indian films like Brahmastra Part One ($45 million), Singham Again ($42 million). , and Jawan ($36 million).
All about Rings of Power
Based on JRR Tolkien’s appendices, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power tells the story of the rise of Sauron, the primary antagonist of Tolkien’s work. The show takes place centuries before the events of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and introduces old fan-favorite characters as well as several new characters. The first season received mixed reviews but good ratings. A better-received second season was released earlier this year.
