In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Himalayan Siddha Akshar, founder of Akshar Yoga Center, shared, “During puberty, yoga can be an invaluable companion for young girls who deal with the physical and emotional changes that come with this transformative period. Practicing asanas (yoga postures) can help reduce menstrual cramps and discomfort, while also promoting flexibility, strength, and body awareness. Additionally, the mindfulness and breath control techniques inherent in yoga can help manage stress, anxiety, and mood swings that are often associated with hormonal fluctuations.”

Childbirth

According to Himalayan Siddha Akshar, as women enter child-bearing age, yoga can be a helpful ally during pregnancy and postpartum recovery. They explained, “Prenatal yoga classes provide gentle postures and breathing exercises that can ease common discomforts such as backaches, swelling and fatigue. During labor, breathing control techniques learned in yoga can be helpful in managing contractions and reducing anxiety. In the postpartum period, yoga can help rebuild core strength, improve posture and promote relaxation – all essential for the demands of motherhood.”

Menopause

Himalayan Siddha Akshar explains, “During the menopause transition, yoga can provide significant relief from the physical and emotional symptoms associated with this stage. Practicing restorative postures and gentle stretches can help reduce hot flashes, night sweats, and muscle pain. Additionally, mindfulness practices in yoga can help manage the mood swings, anxiety, and sleep disturbances often experienced during menopause.”

Beyond the physical benefits, yoga promotes a sense of self-awareness and self-acceptance, which can be especially valuable for women as they go through different stages of life. Himalayan Siddha Akshar said, “The practice encourages a non-critical attitude toward the body, which promotes a deep appreciation for its capabilities and changes at different stages. In addition, the community aspect of yoga can provide a supportive environment for women to connect with others who are experiencing similar life changes. The shared experience of practicing together can create a sense of connection and camaraderie with one another, which can be therapeutic in itself.”

She concludes, “In short, yoga is a versatile and adaptable practice that can provide a multitude of benefits for women at every stage of life. Whether it’s navigating the physical and emotional changes of puberty, supporting the journey to motherhood, or providing solace during the menopause transition, yoga offers a holistic approach to wellness that can be tailored to individual needs and circumstances.”
