The director who overturned Devanand and Shammi Kapoor, made one to one and one was ‘Vegetarian’

Javed Akhtar told that Nasir Hussain had changed the on-screen image of Dev Anand and Shammi Kapoor. Nasir changed the image of Shammi with ‘Tumsa Dekha’ and wrote ‘Munimji’ and ‘Paying Guest’ of Dev Anand.

New Delhi. In the 1950s, actors of the Hindi film industry were known for their specific style. The on-screen personality of stars like Devanand and Shammi Kapoor was so unique that they looked different from the rest. In a recent conversation, senior screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar told who had reversed both of them.

Javed Saheb recently interacted with Aamir Khan during the film Festival ‘Aamir Khan: Cinema’s Jourdergy’. In this conversation, he discussed Dev Anand and Shammi Kapoor and said that because of their image completely turned on screen. He told which director and producer was behind it.

In the conversation, the lyricist said that filmmaker Nasir Hussain had created this unique style for Dev and Shammi. Aamir Khan is the nephew of Nasir.

Javed Akhtar said in the conversation, ‘Nasir, known for directing films like’ Tumsa Nahi Dekha ‘,’ Caravan ‘,’ Yaadon Ki Baaraat ‘, is credited with highlighting the unique features of Shammi Kapoor on screen. Javed recalled that before working with Nasir, Shammi’s look was very different and his on-screen style was not so special. But, everything changed after ‘Tumsa Sawa’.

He said, ‘Shammi Kapoor had a mustache, there was a separate hairstyle. He changed the image of Shammi in ‘Tumsa Nahi Dekha’. All this young energy, which is the flirtatious in films, which people are still trying to add to their films, they invented all this. It did not exist before him.

Nasir Hussain also made the on-screen image of Dev SahebE
Javed Saheb spoke and talked about Devanand further. He said that the on-screen image of Dev Saheb was also created by Nasir Hussain. Nasir wrote two of Dev’s films ‘Munimji’ in 1955 and ‘Paying Guest’ in 1957. Later, he directed Devanand in the 1961 ‘Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai’. Javed shared, ‘Devanand, Nasir Saheb’s films’ Munimji’, ‘Paying Guest’ became Devanand.

‘Vegetarian’ actor told Devanand
He further said that the image of Dev Saheb which we know… he used to be a very vegetarian actor. There was a film that Devanand had done, there were two friends in it. One was Playboy and the other was Gandhian. Playboy was played by Manmohan Krishna and Dev Saheb played the role of Gandhian. This was the 1951 film ‘Aram’. Before working with Nasir, Dev was a superstar who did films like ‘Baji’, ‘Jal’ and ‘Taxi Driver’.

Nasir Hussain was the least in the industry
Talking about Nasir Hussain, Javed Saheb said, he was one of the producer-directors who were the least in the film industry. In the era of writing the story of films, Javed worked with Salim Khan on ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’ with Nasir. She was one of the first hit films of Salim-Javed’s writing pair. However, Nasir has been credited as co-author in the film. Salim-Javed did not work with Nasir Hussain after this.

Nasir was angry with Salim-Javed
It is said that Nasir was angry with Salim-Javed, because he gave him a script which was very similar to ‘Zanjeer’. This has also been mentioned in Dipatkirati Chaudhary’s book ‘Ritten by Salim-Javed’. He had said, ‘When I realized that Salim-Javed had given me and Prakash Mehra a single original plot, by then it was too late. But our characters and treatment were completely different and so both ‘Zanjeer’ and my film were a big hit in the same year.
