The conviction of these 6 opposition MPs can change the outcome of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in UP

Date:

The Lok Sabha elections 2024 saw a close contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the India Bloc in Uttar Pradesh, with the opposition eventually winning 43 of the 81 seats. However, the results could change as at least six recently elected Members of Parliament (MP) representing the India Bloc from Uttar Pradesh face multiple criminal charges, which could lead to conviction.

The most prominent name among them is Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari, who is the elder brother of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari. Afzal had won the election as a SP candidate.

Afzal Ansari has already been sentenced to four years in a Gangster Act case. The Allahabad High Court had stayed his sentence, after which he was allowed to contest the elections. However, the case will be heard when the court reopens in July. If the court upholds his sentence, he will lose his membership of Parliament.

Remember that Ansari was disqualified from Lok Sabha membership in the last term after being convicted in a murder case. He won the 2019 election from Ghazipur as a BSP candidate.

If an MP is convicted in a case involving imprisonment for more than two years, he is disqualified.

Azamgarh MP and Samajwadi Party leader Dharmendra Yadav has four criminal cases pending against him and if he is sentenced to more than two years, his membership will end. Similarly, Jaunpur MP Babu Singh Kushwaha has 25 cases registered against him related to the NRHM scam, which took place when Mayawati was the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Rambhual Nishad, who won from Sultanpur seat by defeating BJP’s Maneka Gandhi, has eight cases registered against him, one of which is registered under the Gangster Act. Similarly, several cases are registered against Chandauli MP Virendra Singh and Saharanpur MP Imran Masood.

The cases registered against these Indian block MPs include those related to money laundering, intimidation and various sections of the Gangsters Act, which attract imprisonment of up to two years.

Earlier also, many MPs have lost their membership after being found guilty in criminal cases. These include leaders like Mohammad Azam Khan, Khabbu Tiwari, Vikram Saini and Ashok Chandel.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024 were held from April 19 to June 1 in seven phases. The results were declared on June 4. The BJP-led NDA won 294 seats, while Bharat Bloc won 237 seats with the help of three independent candidates.
