The Supreme Court in its decision on Friday refused to postpone or reschedule the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Postgraduate exam (NEET PG 2024). The exam will be held on August 11. A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra rejected the plea to postpone the NEET PG 2024 exam and said that it cannot order postponement of the exam a few days before it is to be held.

“Now NEET PG is being postponed? How can we postpone such an exam? Nowadays people just ask for postponement of exams,” the court said while dismissing the plea.

Refusing to postpone the exam, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud said“In principle we will not reschedule the programme.”

He said 2 lakh students would suffer if the exams were postponed. “There are 2 lakh students and 4 lakh parents who will cry over the weekend… We cannot put the careers of so many candidates at risk because of these petitioners,” Chandrachud was quoted as saying by Bar & Bench.

According to Live Law, Chandrachud said, “The simple answer is that we all live in a country that is extremely diverse – geographically and culturally, so we have these big exams…”

The Supreme Court was hearing a petition filed by Vishal Soren. The petition said that the candidates are facing difficulties in reaching their examination centers as they have been allotted examination centers in cities where it is inconvenient for them to reach.

It argued that the allotment of exam cities was done on July 31 and the designated centres were to be announced on August 8, leaving very little time for the candidates to reach the respective centres for the exam scheduled on August 11.
