Supreme Court directs Bombay High Court to consider interim relief for visually impaired IIT Bombay student.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the High Court to consider granting interim relief regarding accommodation in the case of a visually impaired IIT Bombay student. Hearing the student’s petition, a bench of Justices BR Gavai, Augustine George Masih and K Vinod Chandran issued this order. As per PTI report, the student is currently pursuing MSc in Biotechnology at IIT Bombay.
“This is an SLP (Special Leave Petition) that we have filed on behalf of a student of IIT Bombay who is facing serious difficulty in getting reasonable accommodation for which he is entitled under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Deserves.” The lawyer said, PTI reports.
The bench said the matter is pending before a division bench of the Bombay High Court. “We will request the High Court to take an early decision on this,” the bench remarked.
Responding to the Supreme Court’s query, the lawyer said the case was scheduled to be heard on January 27. He noted that the petitioner had approached the High Court in March last year and the matter has been pending since then.
The counsel also told the bench about a circular from two different High Courts in which cases related to persons with disabilities have been given priority.
“Therefore, we request the Division Bench of the High Court, which has jurisdiction over the matter, to hear the question of granting at least interim relief on the scheduled date i.e. January 27, 2025,” the bench said. And the petition was disposed of.
