In a recent interview, filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh told casting director Mukesh Chhabra about the challenges he faced while shooting his hit film Kahaani.
Sujoy Ghosh’s ‘Kahaani’ was made in 2012 on a low budget, but the film was successful at the box office. Speaking to casting director Mukesh Chhabra on Mashable India, the filmmaker recalled how Vidya Balan had to change into an Innova during the shoot because they couldn’t afford a vanity van. ‘Vidya is very dedicated’
Sujoy had made a film called Aladdin in 2009 and was sure that it would be a hit. But the film starring Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Riteish Deshmukh and Jacqueline Fernandez was unsuccessful. It took four years of his time with low returns. Sujoy told Mukesh that Vidya could have said no to ‘Kahaani’ after the film flopped, but she did not leave because she had given her word.
He said, “I saw Vidya when she was in Sanjay Gupta’s office to listen to a story from Meghna Gulzar. I gave it to him 1 that day and told him that we would make a film together. He saved me; That was the story. After Aladdin she could have easily said no, but she stuck to it. you have no idea; We had no budget. So, we didn’t have any vanity van. We used to cover the Innova with a black cloth and she used to change clothes inside. He is very dedicated.”
Sujoy also said that Vidya is ‘sure of her tongue’ like Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan. The story also stars Parambrata Chatterjee and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The film won three National Awards for Best Screenplay (Original), Best Editing and a special jury award for Nawazuddin.

Sujoy debuted as a filmmaker with 2003’s Jhankaar Beats and had last directed a segment for Netflix’s anthology series, Lust Stories 2 and Jaane Jaan with Kareena Kapoor, Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma. He will soon direct Shah Rukh Khan and Suhana Khan in King. Vidya was last seen in Do Aur Do Pyaar with Pratik Gandhi, Ileana D’Cruz and Sendhil Ramamurthy. She will soon star in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 with Kartik Aaryan and Triptii Dimri.
