Study says Indians faced worse condition than others due to lung damage after Covid; How to Improve Lung Function

Date:

Indian Covid survivors suffered significant and greater loss in lung function compared to their European and Chinese counterparts, according to a new study. When it comes to damage to the lungs, Covid seems to have taken a huge toll on the respiratory health of Indians, this new study shows. The study conducted by Christian Medical College, Vellore on the impact of COVID-19 on lung function and quality of life in Indians was published in the journal PLOS Global Public Health. The study was conducted on 207 Indians during the first wave of the pandemic in India, and showed that Indian subjects developed worse impairment in lung function compared to other published groups consisting mostly of Caucasian subjects. The study was designed to study the impact of COVID-19 lung damage in patients who contract COVID-19 infection with the help of lung function tests, exercise tolerance, chest radiography and quality of life measurements. The study said that while most people can recover within a year of infection, others’ lungs may be permanently damaged for life. Subjects underwent pulmonary function testing, six-minute walking test, chest radiography, and St. George respiratory questionnaire.

“In a large Indian cohort, we have reported the presence of residual lung damage after COVID-19, as measured by lung function tests, exercise capacity, chest radiography and quality of life measurements. Our population had relatively high symptomatology and comorbidities More have been reported.” Decreased lung function compared to most published studies. we have shown

The study states that lung damage following COVID-19 results in significant impairment of lung function, quality of life and exercise tolerance.

In people recovering from COVID-19, there is evidence of potential long-term pulmonary sequelae and associated lung function impairment. The most serious illness in the context of SARS-CoV-2 infection is acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In some, ARDS may result in fibrotic interstitial lung disease.

Signs and symptoms of post-Covid lung damage

Post-COVID lung damage, also known as acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) or long-lasting COVID, can manifest in a variety of ways, primarily affecting the respiratory system. Does it. Dr Neha Rastogi Consultant, Infectious Diseases, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram says individuals recovering from COVID-19 may experience persistent symptoms indicating lung damage.

1. Difficulty in breathing: Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, especially during physical activity, may persist long after the acute phase of infection has passed.

2. Persistent cough: A cough that lasts for weeks or months after the initial infection is common in individuals with post-COVID lung damage.

3. Chest pain or stiffness: Some individuals may experience chest pain or tightness, which may worsen with deep breathing or exertion.

4. Fatigue: Chronic fatigue is a common symptom of post-Covid lung damage, often accompanied by reduced exercise tolerance.

5. Decreased exercise tolerance: Persistent shortness of breath or fatigue may result in individuals experiencing a decreased ability to engage in physical activities they previously tolerated.

6. Frequent respiratory infections: Susceptibility to respiratory infections may increase after COVID-19, as lung damage can weaken the immune system’s ability to fight pathogens.

How to treat post-Covid lung damage

Management of post-Covid lung damage involves a multidisciplinary approach aimed at reducing symptoms and improving lung function, says Dr Rastogi.

Treatment strategies may include:

Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Structured exercise programs under the supervision of health care professionals can help improve lung function, stamina, and overall physical health.

Medicines: Bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed to reduce symptoms such as shortness of breath and swelling of the airways.

Oxygen Therapy: In cases of severe lung damage, supplemental oxygen therapy may be necessary to ensure adequate oxygen levels in the bloodstream.

Nutritional Support: A balanced diet rich in nutrients and hydration is essential to support overall health and aid recovery.

Psychological support: Dealing with chronic symptoms can take a toll on mental health. Counseling or support groups may be beneficial in dealing with the emotional impact of lung damage after Covid.

Regular monitoring: Close monitoring by healthcare providers is important to monitor progress, adjust treatment plans as needed, and address any emerging complications.
