Students with 4-year UG degree can now appear for NET directly: UGC Chairman

Students with a 4-year undergraduate degree can now directly appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET) and pursue PhD, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Jagadesh Kumar said on Sunday.

To pursue PhD with or without Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), students with a 4-year undergraduate degree require a minimum of 75 percent aggregate marks or equivalent grade.

Currently, a NET candidate requires a master’s degree with a minimum of 55 percent marks.

“Candidates with a four-year undergraduate degree can now directly pursue PhD and appear for NET. Such candidates are allowed to appear in the subject in which they wish to pursue PhD, irrespective of the subject in which they have completed the four-year degree,” the UGC chairman told the news agency. “Candidates passing a four-year or eight-semester undergraduate degree program must have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale, wherever the grading system is followed,” he said.

He further said that Kota students Possibly a relaxation of 5 percent marks or its equivalent grade will be given.

“Non-Creamy Layer, Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Class (Other backward classes) – Candidates belonging to Divyang, Economically Weaker Section and other categories as decided by UGC from time to time.

NET is conducted twice a year – June and December. Its scores are currently used for award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and for eligibility for appointment as Assistant Professor for those with master’s degree.

Earlier this year, ugc Announced that NET scores will be used for PhD admissions from 2024-25 to eliminate the need for separate entrance examinations.

“Starting from the academic session 2024-2025, universities across the country will have the opportunity to use NET scores for admission PhD program, replacing the need for separate entrance examinations conducted by individual universities and higher education institutions (HEIs). “This is an important step toward streamlining the admissions process and increasing access for interested doctoral candidates.”
