In the wake of increasing complaints over the weight of school bags, the State government is considering various measures to address the concerns of children and parents, General Education Minister V Sivankutty has said.

If the Kerala government decides to go ahead with its new ‘Bag Free Days’ initiative, children will no longer have to carry heavy bags to school, at least for four days a month.

In view of the increasing complaints over the weight of school bags, the State government is considering various measures to address the concerns of children and parents, General Education Minister V. Sivankutty has said.

In a statement on Friday, he said the government will soon take a decision on the issue of heavy school bags for students of Classes 1 to 12 in the state.

There are many complaints and suggestions coming from parents and those who love the public education system.

Sivankutty said textbooks were already being printed and distributed among children in the state in two parts, aimed at reducing the burden.

But the minister said there were complaints that school bags were still too heavy.

Instructions will be issued to keep the weight of school bags of Class 1 students between 1.6 kg to 2.2 kg and the weight of school bags of Class 10 students between 2.5 kg to 4.5 kg.

Apart from this, the government is also considering starting a “Bag Free Day” initiative for at least four days a month in state schools.
