According to media reports, the people of the Wodaabe tribe are polygamous and their marriages are of two types. The first is a traditionally arranged marriage and the second is a marriage done as per one’s choice. Generally, in our society, the second marriage is also arranged with a girl known to them, but this does not happen in this tribe. The responsibility of the first marriage is taken up by the family members only, for the second marriage, the men have to steal someone else’s wife. When do wives get stolen?
This nomadic tribe of herders and traders in the Sahel region of West Africa is known for its elaborate costumes and cultural ceremonies. They also organize a festival for second marriages, which is called the Gerewol Festival. In this festival, men desperate for second marriage steal other people’s wives. But stealing other people’s wives is not that easy.

Before this, they have to do one thing, under which the men who are getting married for the second time dress up and paint their faces. After this, they try to woo the wives of others by dancing and doing various activities. Also, they make sure that the husbands of those women do not know about this. In such a situation, if the woman likes the other man, she runs away with him. Later, the people of that community find both of them and get them married. This second marriage is accepted as a love marriage.
