New Delhi. The constitutional court of South Korea on Monday canceled impeachment against Prime Minister Han Duck-Su. After the court order, Han Duck-Su’s Ki was restored as acting leader. However, the court has not yet pronounced the decision on the separate impeachment of President Union Suk Yol. Han became the acting President when Yu was impeached by the National Assembly due to the implementation of martial law on 3 December, which gave rise to a major political crisis. But after political tension with opposition MPs in the end of December, Han was also impeached by the assembly.

These unprecedented, frequent impeachments suspended the top two officials of the country, which increased the internal division and deepened concerns about the diplomatic and economic activities of the country. Since then, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Choi Song-Mok was working as the acting President. On Monday, seven of the eight judges of the court canceled or rejected Han’s impeachment. He ruled that the allegations against him were not against the law, nor were it so serious that he should be removed from the post, or his impeachment motion did not fulfill the quorum necessary to pass in the assembly. A judge retained Han’s impeachment.

Decision remains on President
The court has not yet pronounced the decision on the impeachment of Yu. If the court maintains the impeachment of Yu, South Korea will have to hold elections for the new President. If the court gives a verdict in their favor, Yun will be restored to the post and they will regain their powers of the presidency. Yu was impeached about two weeks before Han. The observers had earlier estimated that the Constitutional Court would pronounce the verdict on the case of Yu, but it did not happen.
